2023 Advent Guide 'Between'

2023 Advent Guide 'Between'

Advent comes at a time when many of us find ourselves in a space of hoping, dreaming, and longing for much right now—peace, ceasefire, rest, healing—just to name a few.

In the midst of these 'not yet' seasons, what sustains and strengthens us?
What do we need for the in-between spaces of our lives?

Between: Advent Reflections and Practices for the Holy 'Not Yet' explores the 'between' spaces with reflections on grief, beauty, rest, and imagination. It's the Advent guide that I needed, and I hope it resonates with you too.

2021 Advent Guide

The Embodiment of God.

The Embodiment of Us.

Advent is a sacred season of expectant waiting and preparation. It’s the season of celebrating God moving into the neighborhood in the person of Jesus.

One of the often overlooked and unexpected miracles of this season is the simple fact that God chose a body. Because when you stop to think about it, why a body and why flesh? Why would the God who created and sustained the entire universe want to subject themselves to the dependency, fragility and vulnerability that comes with living in a body—especially a brown one?

The Embodiment of God, The Embodiment of Us: Reflections and Body Practices for Advent is the humble attempt of Kimberly Goode and I to offer a response to this honest inquiry. Its not your typical Advent guide, but it felt like what we needed and we hope it might meet a need of yours, too. Our guiding idea is this: If God honored the body enough to move into one, perhaps we should more fully live into our bodies as well.

Beauty Beckons.

And your heart knows how to respond.

Below are resources and practices for your contemplative journey. But remember, contemplation can happen in everyday moments—taking a deep breath during a busy day or pausing to feel the rain or sun on your skin—anything that brings you into awareness of beauty and the divine.

NEW! Guided Reflections for Lent 2021

Lent is the 6-week period starting on Ash Wednesday through Easter that is observed by Christians around the world. While it is most commonly associated with the Roman Catholic church and a time for repentance and fasting, Lent is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our humanity, vulnerability, and personal and collective pain. We find solidarity with a God who also suffered. I partnered with Pastor Van Manivanh to offer 4 guided meditations that can be referenced during Lent following the themes Remember, Release, Reconcile, and Return. You can listen and also download each meditation below. If meditations are new for you, you can find some tips for getting started here.

While We Wait… Advent Guide 2020

In December 2020, we offered a devotional guide to center Christ and reflect the lens of Black experiences and voices. While We Wait… was written by Kimberly Goode and Leonetta Elaiho as an invitation to inclusive reflection and contemplative space during the Advent season. Inside, find weekly reflections, creative exercises, breath prayers and dope playlists!
